Heat pumps—they are not just for mild climates anymore. Introducing the Bosch IDS Ultra—a heat pump designed to keep you and your family warm even on the coldest nights. Powered by Bosch inverter technology, the Bosch IDS Ultra Heat Pump is the first Bosch air-to-air heat pump designed to provide reliable, energy efficient heating even in sub-zero temperatures. This cold climate heat pump can provide 100% heating down to an outdoor temperature of 5° F and will continue to initiate heating even down to -13° F. The IDS Ultra is available up to 5-ton capacities and meets the U.S. Department of Energy’s Cold Climate Challenge. Equipped with R-454B refrigerant, the IDS Ultra meets the criteria for a lower global warming potential (GWP) A2L refrigerant.even on the coldest nights. The colder it is outside, the harder it is for heat pumps to extract heat from the air. Bosch engineers addressed this common issue by outfitting the IDS Ultra with an Enhanced Vapor Injection (EVI) compressor. The EVI compressor borrows extra heat from the hot side of the refrigerant cycle, redirecting it to warm the home. This design boosts the IDS Ultra's performance, keeping you warm on cold winter days.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) confirmed that Bosch’s solution meets the requirements of the Residential Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to advance the technology to allow consumers to make the switch to a cleaner energy future with less carbon emissions.
The Bosch IDS Ultra underwent extensive testing at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. For five weeks, the system was placed inside an ice-cold lab that was surrounded by chillers to see how well it could operate in freezing conditions and meet various performance criteria, including: heating at 100% capacity down to 5°F, low global warming potential refrigerant, auxiliary heat, connectivity, and other performance criteria critical to energy efficient electric heating performance in colder regions.
On extremely hot or frigid days, the load on the electrical grid may become too high, potentially causing blackouts. The demand response feature allows utilities (with the homeowner’s permission) to manage this intelligently. Utilities can predict when there will be peak demand on the grid and can remotely send a signal to the heat pump to heat or cool the space before or after this peak period of usage.
Bosch Home Comfort is known for its inverter compressor technology. The IDS Ultra has a continuous variable speed inverter compressor, meaning it can fully modulate and adjust its output from minimum to maximum power. Most of the time, the full capacity of the compressor is not needed to keep the home comfortable. By controlling the compressor in 1% increments, the IDS Ultra ramps the compressor up or down to achieve an optimal and consistent indoor temperature, as well as maximize energy efficiency. This is an extremely efficient way to control the temperature in your home without compromising comfort.
The IDS Ultra is widely compatible with existing air-to-air installation. This compatibility makes the unit an excellent fit for retrofits and at similar installation costs when compared to regular air-to-air heat pumps.
Equipped with R-454B refrigerant, the Bosch IDS Ultra has a low global warming potential (low-GWP), meeting the criteria of the AIM Act.
